Rehovot is a university city about 20 km south of Tel Aviv, home to the Weizmann Institute of Science. The Weizmann Institute's guide for visiting scientists says the city has, by Israeli standards, a large English-speaking population. Nefesh B'Nefesh says Anglo olim are spread across the city, but many live near the Berman and Chatam synagogues.
The Berman Shul, a Modern Orthodox synagogue established in 1970, says on its own site that it lists about 320 member families, most of whom made aliyah from English-speaking countries. Chatam was founded in 1983 by a group of kollel members who felt the city's English-speaking community needed Torah study, and organised shiurim in English. Nefesh B'Nefesh calls it an out-of-town-style Yeshivish learning community with an English-speaking rav. An article written with The Getter Group, an aliyah and real estate firm, put it at about 100 families in December 2025.
Adat Shalom Emanuel, a Masorti congregation, was established in 1970 by North American immigrants, according to a page written around 2010. The municipality's absorption department runs Hebrew, English and Yiddish study groups for adults. Nefesh B'Nefesh lists an Anglo olim coordinator at the Oleh House, and the Ministry of Aliyah lists a coordinator for the city who speaks English and Russian.

Where people live
Northern Rehovot
Wikipedia describes a growing community of religious English speakers living mainly in northern Rehovot, around the Weizmann Institute. Nefesh B'Nefesh puts it more broadly: Anglo olim live across the city, many of them near the Berman and Chatam shuls.

Kiryat Moshe and Oshiot
Wikipedia says Rehovot's Russian, Yemenite and Ethiopian Jewish communities are concentrated largely in these two areas. One of the Israel Land Authority tenders open for bids on 14 October 2026 is in Kiryat Moshe.

Who lives here
Nefesh B'Nefesh calls Rehovot a highly diverse city, from traditional and religious to Chareidi and secular. In the 2022 census the most common household described itself as secular.

Chareidi schools Anglo families use
Nefesh B'Nefesh's guide for Chareidi olim names Pninim Bais Yaakov as the Bais Yaakov for many Anglo families, says the city's Bais Yaakov takes the daughters of most Chareidi families, many Anglo families among them, and says Be'er Cheder serves many kollel families, some of them Anglo. For high school, some families send boys to Ramat Beit Shemesh.
Everyone else
The Weizmann Institute's guide says children normally attend the kindergarten or elementary school in their own neighbourhood, and the municipality runs Hebrew classes for preschoolers. We found no official source naming which state or state-religious schools take most English-speaking pupils, so ask the schools and the absorption department.
Getting around

By road
Nefesh B'Nefesh's guide for Chareidi olim puts Rehovot 38 minutes from Tel Aviv, 48 from Jerusalem and about 40 from Ramat Beit Shemesh, without saying by what means or at what hour. With no direct train, Jerusalem means a car, a bus or a change of trains.
Hospital
Kaplan Medical Center is in the city; Wikipedia notes it is a teaching hospital for the Hebrew University's medical school. Nefesh B'Nefesh says all four kupot cholim have branches in Rehovot.

A Hebrew-speaking city
The Getter Group's article says it plainly: Rehovot is not an English-speaking town, and children need Hebrew. Of the 4,385 olim who settled here from 2014 to 2023, 3,464 came from the former Soviet Union and 484 from the US and UK together.
No count of English speakers
The only figures are shul memberships, which overlap and are self-reported: about 320 families at Berman (its own site) and about 100 at Chatam (the Getter Group article). We found no official count, and no AACI branch page for the city.
Who should pick Rehovot, and who should not
Pick it if you are
- Modern Orthodox families who want a large shul where most members came from English-speaking countries.
- Yeshivish families who want shiurim in English and Chareidi schools that Anglo families already use.
- Households where one partner commutes to Tel Aviv by train.
- Academics and scientists working at the Weizmann Institute.
Look elsewhere if you are
- Buyers on a tight budget.
- Investors buying for rental income.
- Anyone who needs a daily train to Jerusalem.
- Families who want to get by mostly in English.
