The English-speaking community

Nefesh B'Nefesh, in a guide last updated in March 2024, writes that over 30 percent of Netanya's residents are immigrants, with a sizable population of English-speaking olim alongside large communities from the former Soviet Union, France and Ethiopia. In February 2026 the director of OU Israel's Department for Anglo Engagement and Programming wrote in the Jerusalem Post that Netanya absorbed 321 English-speaking olim in the last two years, without naming the source of the figure.

The local AACI branch lists seven English-speaking congregations: the McDonald International Shul, which calls itself an orthodox, English-speaking, Ashkenazi community and was founded by new olim in 1973; Young Israel of North Netanya; Young Israel of Ramat Poleg; SNAC, the South Netanya Ashkenazi Congregation; Tefilat Yamim in Ir Yamim; the Masorti Bet Israel; and the Reform Natan-Ya. In 2017 Jewish News wrote that Young Israel of North Netanya had been known for 35 years as one of Israel's biggest Anglo synagogues. In Kiryat Hasharon, the Modern Orthodox Kehillat Shevet Achim, not on the AACI list, had more than 70 families in February 2025, according to the Jewish Chronicle.

Netanya AACI describes itself as the community center for all English speakers in the Netanya area, with counselling on absorption, rights, jobs, health funds and National Insurance, Hebrew classes, and a library of more than 6,000 English books. Nefesh B'Nefesh lists an Anglo oleh coordinator at the municipality, and the Ministry of Aliyah lists a coordinator who speaks English. The AACI list also names ESRA and Telfed, the South African Zionist Federation.

Where people live

  • Kiryat Hasharon

Wikipedia, citing a 2015 ynet profile, describes mostly young couples with one to three children; it also records a growing Anglo Modern Orthodox community, upwards of 70 families as of 2025. Kehillat Shevet Achim started with ten families meeting in a member's flat; by February 2025 it had more than 70 families and more than 200 children, and upwards of 40 per cent of its adult members were born in Britain.

  • North Netanya

Home to the McDonald International Shul on McDonald Street, near Kikar Ha'atzmaut, and to Young Israel of North Netanya on Shlomo Hamelech.

  • Ir Yamim, Ramat Poleg, Nitza Boulevard, Nof Hatayelet

Popular with olim, according to Nefesh B'Nefesh, alongside Kiryat Hasharon. Ramat Poleg has its own Young Israel and Ir Yamim has Tefilat Yamim, both on the AACI list of English-speaking congregations.

Netanya is not among the five places Nefesh B'Nefesh names as having the most English-speaking olim students. We found no official source naming a Netanya school with many English-speaking pupils, so ask the schools and the municipal absorption department.
