The English-speaking community

Carmei Gat is a newer neighbourhood on Kiryat Gat's north side, established in 2017. Its volunteer community website puts the English-speaking community at around 300 families as of mid 2026. In August 2026 the Times of Israel quoted Nefesh B'Nefesh: more than 100 English-speaking families moved there in the past year. Nefesh B'Nefesh lists Kiryat Gat: Carmei Gat as an Emerging Community, with "a few hundred NBN Olim" in the city. The Ministry of Aliyah's figures stop at 2023, before most of that growth: of 1,485 olim who settled in Kiryat Gat from 2014 to 2023, 165 came from the US and 29 from the UK. In the 2022 census 2.2% of the city's residents were born in the Americas, North and South together.

Carmei Zion, a National Religious Ashkenazi shul founded in 2017, is the largest: over 250 member families as of mid 2026, according to the community website, with minyanim every weekday and Shabbat. It broke ground on a permanent building in September 2025 and has no rabbi at present; a search is under way. In April 2023 the Jewish Standard put about 70 percent of its then 150 family units as English speakers. The same website describes Nechalim, founded in 2025, as mostly English-speaking families (about 30 in September 2025), and the Snappy Zappy Minyan as mostly English-speaking, Friday night only. Yachad, it says, is a more Israeli crowd with English speakers among its over 100 families.

Nefesh B'Nefesh lists two volunteer Anglo oleh coordinators for Carmei Gat and Ulpan Shoshana in Kiryat Gat. The Ministry of Aliyah lists four coordinators for the city; one speaks English. The public library in Kiryat Gat proper has books mostly in Hebrew, English and Russian. We found no AACI or ESRA branch.

Where people live

  • Carmei Gat

Established in 2017 on former farmland, separated from Kiryat Gat's older core by Route 35. The Times of Israel cites municipal data of more than 30,000 residents (August 2026). Nefesh B'Nefesh says it was the first neighbourhood planned under the "roof agreement" model, with housing, roads, schools and parks planned together, and now has roughly 10,000 housing units.

  • Where English speakers are

In several parts of Carmei Gat, going by the community website. Carmei Zion draws members from all over the neighbourhood. Nechalim's families live in 01, the western part nearest the bridge to Kiryat Gat. The site calls the Ropes park in 07 popular with the English-speaking community of nearby Avnei HaChoshen, and the Makolet park by Carmei Zion popular with English speakers on Shabbat.

  • Land offered for new homes

The Israel Land Authority has 4 live tenders for 1,040 homes in Kiryat Gat, 738 of them in long-term rental housing tenders; bids close between 2 Nov 2026 and 14 Dec 2026 (14 Oct 2026).

  • Who lives here

Across the whole city, the most common household in the 2022 census described itself as traditional, and the median age was 30. The CBS puts Kiryat Gat in socio-economic cluster 4 of 10 (2021). In Carmei Gat, a real estate agent told the Times of Israel, almost all residents identify as national religious. Nefesh B'Nefesh describes the city as having all affiliations, with some neighbourhoods homogeneous.

The neighbourhood has religious, secular, Chabad and Haredi elementary schools, a religious girls' middle and high school (Ort HaDati, Tzvia Ulpana) and a secular one, but no religious boys' high school as of mid 2026. Some families send their children to schools in Kiryat Gat proper or nearby communities. Kol Eliyahu, a religious elementary school, ran grades 1 to 3 only in 2025/2026.

  • Schools across the city

The Ministry of Education lists 46 active schools in Kiryat Gat: 16 state, 11 state-religious and 19 Haredi. The list has no language field.

Running costs and safety

The downsides

  • Services are across the road

The train station, post office, library, banks and government offices are in Kiryat Gat proper, none of them in Carmei Gat as of mid 2026.

  • Religious boys leave the neighbourhood for high school

There is no religious boys' high school in Carmei Gat as of mid 2026, and we found no source on where English-speaking boys go instead.

  • City prices mix Carmei Gat with older Kiryat Gat

The city's sold-price medians include older homes across Kiryat Gat. nadlan.gov.il publishes no sale median for Carmei Gat on its own, but it does for rent: ₪4,700 a month for 4 rooms in Carmei Gat against ₪3,500 for the city (20 Aug 2026). So the city's sale figures may not describe Carmei Gat.

  • No direct train to Jerusalem

The current timetable has no direct train from Kiryat Gat to Jerusalem (Ministry of Transport, 14 Oct 2026). Jerusalem is 68 km away.

  • A young community with thin official help in English

The largest shul has no rabbi at present, the newer minyanim meet in homes, party rooms or a park, and the Ministry of Aliyah's four Kiryat Gat coordinators include one English speaker. Most of what is written about English-speaking life here comes from the volunteer community website and the press.

Who should pick Kiryat Gat, and who should not

Pick it if you are

  • National religious families who want a shul with many English speakers in their own neighbourhood.
  • Buyers who want a newer apartment and can live in a neighbourhood still being built, with no station or government offices of its own.
  • Tel Aviv commuters who can take a bus to the station and a direct train from there.

Look elsewhere if you are

  • Families who need a religious boys' high school nearby.
  • Families looking for an English-speaking Masorti, Reform or secular community.
  • Anyone who commutes to Jerusalem by train every day.

Questions about Kiryat Gat

Is Kiryat Gat good for English speakers?

Its English-speaking community is in Carmei Gat, the newer north side. The community website puts its English-speaking community at around 300 families in mid 2026, Nefesh B'Nefesh lists it as an Emerging Community, and the website describes two minyanim as mostly English-speaking. The older parts of Kiryat Gat have no English-speaking community we could find.

Is there an English-speaking shul in Carmei Gat?

Several shuls have many English speakers. Carmei Zion, the largest, is National Religious Ashkenazi with over 250 member families; about 70 percent of its members were English speakers in 2023. The community website describes Nechalim (founded 2025) and the Friday night Snappy Zappy Minyan as mostly English-speaking. In April 2023 Mizrachi and Young Israel named Kehillat Carmei Tzion one of four Anglo olim communities for their Habayta programme, starting September 2023.

How many English speakers live in Carmei Gat?

No official count exists. The volunteer community website says around 300 English-speaking families as of mid 2026. Real estate agents quoted by the Times of Israel in August 2026 estimated 300 immigrant families, and Nefesh B'Nefesh told the paper more than 100 English-speaking families had moved in during the past year.

How much does a home cost in Kiryat Gat?

For the whole city, the median recorded sale over the last 12 months was ₪1,240,400, new and older homes together, and ₪1,442,400 for 4 rooms, 14.1% lower than the year before (nadlan.gov.il, 20 Aug 2026). How much is rent in Carmei Gat?

The median recorded rent over the last 12 months in Carmei Gat was ₪4,700 a month for 4 rooms and ₪4,800 across all homes (nadlan.gov.il, 20 Aug 2026). No. The Ministry of Transport timetable for 14 Oct 2026 to 13 Nov 2026 has no direct train from Kiryat Gat to Jerusalem Yitzhak Navon.

Where do children go to school in Carmei Gat?

The neighbourhood has religious, secular, Chabad and Haredi elementary schools, a religious girls' middle and high school and a secular one. There is no religious boys' high school as of mid 2026, so some families use schools in Kiryat Gat proper or nearby communities. We found no school documented as offering English support.

Is anything being built in Kiryat Gat?

How long do you have to reach a shelter in Kiryat Gat?

45 seconds from the siren, according to the Home Front Command.
