The English-speaking community

Nefesh B'Nefesh describes Beit Shemesh, including Ramat Beit Shemesh, as having a large English-speaking population and tens of thousands of its olim, across all affiliations, with some neighbourhoods homogenous. Its programme for Haredi olim adds that each neighbourhood, and at times specific streets and buildings, has its own hashkafic orientation.

In Ramat Beit Shemesh Aleph, Kehillat Menorat HaMaor calls itself a bastion of Torani-Leumi Orthodoxy serving a diverse English-speaking membership since 2001. Kehilat Meam Loez, founded in 2007, calls itself the only Sephardic Anglo community in Ramat Beit Shemesh. Beis Tefillah Yonah Avraham (BTYA) was founded in 2000 to meet the needs of new olim, with members from the US, Canada, the UK, South Africa and Australia among others. In 2023 Kehillat Mishkan Shilo was one of four Anglo olim communities chosen for a Mizrachi and Young Israel support programme.

In the older city, a community website described Ohel Yona Menachem in Sheinfeld in 2022 as around 60 to 70% English speaking. Nefesh B'Nefesh lists a municipal Project Manager for English-Speaking Olim, and the Ministry of Aliyah lists five local coordinators who speak English.

Where people live

  • Ramat Beit Shemesh

Nefesh B'Nefesh calls it "a frum neighborhood with many diverse communities encompassing the entire spectrum of frum Jewry, both anglo and Israeli". It is split into Aleph, Bet, Gimmel and Daled, which differ sharply.

  • Aleph

About 25,000 people, and home to most of the Anglo shuls named above. Revivim, one of its sections, is mostly Haredi, both Israeli and of Anglo descent.

  • Bet

Primarily Haredi, and most of its residents are Hasidim of various dynasties.

  • Gimmel

Gimmel 1 and 2 "have become very appealing to the Anglo-Saxon public", with a higher share of English speakers in Gimmel 1.

  • Daled

    Predominantly Haredi.

  • The older city

Sheinfeld, Nofei Aviv and Givat Savion have long-standing shuls with immigrant members. In 2022 Beit Midrash Torani Leumi in Sheinfeld listed over 100 families, Israelis and immigrants from the US, Canada and England, and Beit Knesset Feigenson in Nofei Aviv over 150 families.

Running costs and safety

Arnona, average billed

₪45.7

per square metre a year, 2023. The city’s total residential billing over billed area, not your street’s tariff.

Bank of Israel rate

3.25%

The base for mortgage pricing, not a mortgage rate.

Siren warning time

90seconds

to reach a protected space. New buildings must have one: usually a safe room in the apartment (mamad), in some a shared one per floor (mamak). Ask which.

The downsides

  • A mostly Haredi school system

124 of the city's 150 active schools are in the Haredi stream, against 9 state and 17 state-religious schools (Ministry of Education, 14 Oct 2026). The most common household in the 2022 census is Haredi.

  • Neighbourhoods are not interchangeable

Nefesh B'Nefesh says some neighbourhoods are homogenous, and that the orientation can change from one street or building to the next. Check the exact street before you buy.

  • Prices above the national median

In the quarter ending Mar 2026 the median sold home in Beit Shemesh went for ₪2,310,200, against ₪2,058,800 nationally. A 4-room home's median over the last 12 months was ₪2,420,700.

  • Low rental yield

nadlan.gov.il computes a gross rental yield of 2.7% for Beit Shemesh, before arnona, maintenance, vacancy and tax.

  • No English library or Anglo centre found

We found no AACI branch, English library or Anglo community centre in Beit Shemesh. Anglo life here runs through the shuls and schools.

Who should pick Beit Shemesh, and who should not

Pick it if you are

  • Families who want a shul founded by and for English-speaking olim, Torani-Leumi, Sephardi or Haredi.
  • Haredi families who want American-style schools for their children.
  • Commuters to Tel Aviv who can live near the station.
  • Grandparents moving to be close to children who already live here.

Look elsewhere if you are

  • Families who want a state non-religious school nearby, or a religiously mixed street.
  • Anyone who needs a direct train to Jerusalem.
  • Investors buying for rental income.
