The English-speaking community

Harish became a city in May 2022 and had 41,574 residents at the end of 2024 (CBS). HaMizrachi named it, around 2023, as one of two new places that have developed Anglo communities. We found no count of English speakers or Anglo families. Of the 2,028 olim who settled here from 2014 to 2023, 116 came from the US and 30 from the UK, against 966 from the former Soviet Union (Ministry of Aliyah). In the 2022 census 6.8% of residents were born in the Americas, North and South together.

The English-speaking life we could document is one congregation. Kehillat Derech Eretz (KDE) calls itself an English speaking shul and community for olim and Israelis in Harish, and welcomes families at all stages of life. It is led by Rabbi Yehoshua Felberg, who grew up in South London, moved to Harish in 2020 and provides pastoral care in English and Hebrew; his page says the shul was born as the Anglo community came together through learning programmes. The minyan meets at the school on Zayit 6.

Beyond Shabbat and festival services, KDE lists a Sunday lunch and learn, a Monday shiur, a Wednesday women's beit midrash, a Friday morning kollel after Shacharit, a Shabbat women's parsha shiur and a family learning slot, plus year-long Bar and Bat Mitzvah programmes. Its events page shows Purim, Yom Ha'atzmaut and women's events in 2026. Visitors can ask for Shabbat hospitality through a form on its site.

Where people live

  • A new city

Harish was a kibbutz until 1993. Wikipedia says construction of new neighbourhoods began in 2013, and in 2016 the cabinet approved a plan for a city of 50,000, with an eventual goal of 100,000. Wikipedia's table puts the population at 31,733 in 2022 against 41,574 in 2024 (CBS). The CBS profile gives 7.8% growth in 2023, 172 homes started and 369 completed that year.

  • Where English speakers are

We found no source that names an Anglo neighbourhood. Nefesh B'Nefesh's community contacts list has five volunteer entries for Harish: one from KDE for the city as a whole, three in the Choresh neighbourhood and one in Avnei Hen. KDE's minyan meets at the school on Zayit 6.

  • What is being sold now

An Israel Land Authority tender (86/2026) for 722 homes in apartment buildings is open for bids until 26 Oct 2026 (fetched 14 Oct 2026). The authority has run 47 tenders in Harish since 2000.

  • Who lives here

Wikipedia says young, mostly secular couples came in the 1990s for cheap housing, a Garin Torani group followed in 2003, and after secular residents went to the Supreme Court over a 2007 plan they feared would make the city Haredi, housing tenders were opened to the general public. In the 2022 census the most common household described itself as secular, and the median age was 25. The CBS profile counts 17.3% of residents aged 0 to 4 (2023). The CBS puts the city in socio-economic cluster 5 of 10 (2021).

no direct train, a change is needed

  • No train in town

Harish has no railway station of its own. The nearest is Caesarea-Pardes Hanna, 9.2 km in a straight line from the city's centre point, whose fastest weekday train reaches Tel Aviv Savidor in 43 minutes (Ministry of Transport, 14 Oct 2026). The train figures on this page are that station's, not the city's, and do not include the trip to the station.

  • By road

The municipality says residents have direct access to Highway 6 via the Harish Interchange, and puts the city 45 minutes from Tel Aviv and 30 minutes from Kfar Saba and Ra'anana by its own estimate.

  • Work

In the 2022 census 65.1% of Harish's employed residents worked outside the city.

The downsides

  • No station, and no train to Jerusalem

The nearest station is 9.2 km away, and the timetable has no direct train from it to Jerusalem Yitzhak Navon (Ministry of Transport, 14 Oct 2026). Every train trip starts with getting to Caesarea-Pardes Hanna.

  • One shul, no count

We found one English-speaking shul and no second one, no English-speakers' association and no count of Anglo families. Nefesh B'Nefesh has no Community Guide page for Harish; its contacts list is the only Nefesh B'Nefesh listing we found.

  • A Hebrew-speaking city

Most of the decade's olim came from the former Soviet Union (966 of 2,028), then France (215) and Argentina (175); the US and UK together sent 146. The Ministry of Aliyah lists an English-speaking coordinator for the area, based in Hadera, not in Harish.

  • Prices down on the year

The median recorded sale over the last 12 months was ₪1,487,100, 2.8% lower than the year before, and ₪1,427,500 for 4 rooms, 4.9% lower, new and older homes together (nadlan.gov.il, 20 Aug 2026).

  • A city still being built

The CBS counted 172 homes started and 369 completed in 2023. A tender for 722 more homes closes on 26 Oct 2026. Building around the new neighbourhoods is ongoing.

Who should pick Harish, and who should not

Pick it if you are

  • Families who want one small, active English-speaking shul with a rabbi who teaches in English.
  • Buyers looking for homes below the national median within reach of Highway 6.
  • Families with young children who want a young city.

Look elsewhere if you are

  • English speakers who want a choice of congregations or a large Anglo community.
  • Anyone who needs a train in town or to Jerusalem.
  • Families who need English-language schooling.

Questions about Harish

Is Harish good for English speakers?

It has one active English-speaking shul, Kehillat Derech Eretz, with weekly shiurim and family programmes, and HaMizrachi counts it among places that have developed Anglo communities. There is no count of English speakers; the Ministry of Aliyah counts 116 olim from the US and 30 from the UK among the 2,028 who settled here from 2014 to 2023.

Is there an English-speaking shul in Harish?

Yes: Kehillat Derech Eretz, which calls itself an English speaking shul and community for olim and Israelis. It holds Shabbat and festival services at the school on Zayit 6 and is led by Rabbi Yehoshua Felberg, who teaches in English and Hebrew. We found no second English-speaking minyan.

When did the English-speaking community start?

The rabbi's page says he and his wife moved to Harish in 2020, and that the shul was born as the Anglo community came together through learning programmes. HaMizrachi described him, around 2023, as Rav of a rapidly growing community in Harish.

What does KDE run during the week?

Its programme page lists a Sunday lunch and learn, a Monday shiur, a Wednesday women's beit midrash, a Friday kollel after the 8:10am Shacharit, a Shabbat women's parsha shiur, a Shabbat family learning slot, and year-long Bar and Bat Mitzvah programmes.

What does Harish offer new olim?

The municipality's English page lists an absorption department, a 90% arnona discount on the first 100 square metres for one year in the first two years in Israel (check the exact terms with the city), a summer ulpan for children starting first grade and a Hebrew studies centre for children up to 6th grade. Its adult ulpans listed are for Russian and Spanish speakers.

How much does a home cost in Harish?

The median recorded sale over the last 12 months was ₪1,487,100, new and older homes together, and ₪1,427,500 for 4 rooms (nadlan.gov.il, 20 Aug 2026). In the quarter ending Mar 2026 the median was ₪1,420,000, against ₪2,058,800 nationally.

How much is rent in Harish?

The median recorded rent over the last 12 months was ₪3,600 a month for 4 rooms and ₪3,900 across all homes (nadlan.gov.il, 20 Aug 2026). nadlan.gov.il computes a gross rental yield of 3.2%, before arnona, maintenance, vacancy and tax.

How long is the train from Harish to Tel Aviv?

There is no station in Harish. From the nearest, Caesarea-Pardes Hanna (9.2 km away), the fastest weekday direct train takes 43 minutes to Tel Aviv Savidor and 51 minutes to HaHagana (36 direct trains to Savidor that day), per the Ministry of Transport timetable fetched 14 Oct 2026. Add the trip to the station. There is no direct train to Jerusalem.

Is Harish beyond the Green Line?

No. Harish is in the Haifa District, inside the 1949 armistice line. Arutz Sheva placed it within pre-1967 Israel in 2010, and Wikipedia lists Harish among the Wadi Ara localities and says the area was ceded to Israel in the 1949 Israel-Jordan armistice agreement.

How long do you have to reach a shelter in Harish?

90 seconds from the siren, according to the Home Front Command.
